"Japanese youths, through college, have less private space compared their US and even European counterparts. The Japanese urban home is tiny by middle-class American standards..teenagers..generally share a room with a sibling or parent. Most college students in Tokyo live with their parents, often even after they begin work, as the costs of renting an apartment in an urban area are prohibitively high"
