On Sunday 9th of November, 2014 , a beautiful recent blue sky afternoon in Caulfield, the Rotary Club of Glen Eira in association with the CIty of Glen Eira hosted the Japanese-Australia Cultural afternoon. The event was held at the town hall in the upstairs auditorium and entry was a gold coin donation. Volunteers manned the desk as a long line of visitors entered to participate and where given a colour program which was really a passport to Japan for the afternoon. All proceeds collected were for victims of the Fukushima Daiichi disaster.
Once inside the auditorium large yellow signs with Japanese and English guided the traveller to the range of cultural events on offer which included: food, Japanese tea ceremony, origami classes, handicraft stalls, calligraphy, bonsai stall and flower arrangement classes.
Onstage a range of singers, musical instrument performances, dancers and artists shared deep insights into Japanese culture. Bright colours from beautiful kimonos with leaf motives brightened the room and if you closed your eyes: the smells, noise and ambience put you in Japan.
Congratulations to the organisers, sponsors and volunteers for putting on a wonderful event!
